Character: Leo Valdez
Canon: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: from the end of Blood of Olympus
Age: 16
Background Information: wiki link here
Personality: When you lay eyes on Leo Valdez, the first thing you see is his mischievous grin, followed by the constant movement. While all demigods have ADHD to an extent (their brains are hardwired for battle), his case is extreme. If he's not bouncing on his feet or moving around, he's constantly fiddling with things in his pockets. He's rarely quiet, always chattering, making jokes, and coming up with wild pranks. He's sometimes even a bad judge of the limits to his jokes, pushing the edge of whether it's actually mean. Most people are quick to assume he doesn't know how to take moments serious, but he can be when it counts. Even when he is being serious, it doesn't always seem like it, since he goes about fighting monsters in ridiculous ways. When facing Narcissus, Leo rips his shirt, draws fake tattoos all over his arms and clothes, and plays the distraction. Other things he's done include rewiring a megaphone to sound like Darth Vader, and even hacking a billboard to say "ALL DA LADIES LUV LEO".
Being that he was always small and scrawny, let alone never staying in one place for long, he learned quickly that being funny kept him safe. Bullies wouldn't hurt you if you were good at making them laugh. It quickly became a defense mechanism, especially when his family abandoned him after the death of his mother. His aunt blamed him, so he ran away, and never stopped running -- until he found a home in Camp Half Blood. It was the first place he felt like he belonged since losing his mother. Every foster home never lasted, no matter how nice they were, and he would just run away again. But Camp Half-Blood was different because everyone else there was different too. Even when the others learned of his fire powers, they weren't afraid of him and still welcomed him with open arms.
Being a child of Hephaestus, building and fixing things are his special talent. There isn't much he can't make, from designing and building the Argo II -- his Greek trireme, to rebuilding his golden dragon Festus. Machines just make sense to him, much more than people do. It's always been easier for him to feel comfortable in a workshop than around people, but when he does make friends, he's loyal to a fault. He's terrified of dying, but puts himself in harms way to protect his friend. He even sacrifices himself at the final battle against Gaea, because he knows it's the only way to save the world (and get back to his girlfriend, Calypso). But this isn't his only sacrifice. He sacrifices his metal dragon to save his friends, he uses and breaks the rare Archimedes' spheres to get them all out of a pinch, and even uses his gift from Nemesis to save his friends, knowing full and well the consequences that will come with it. He decides quickly that his friends are worth it.
Even though he tends to talk big, he really doesn't think highly of himself. He lost his mom, grew up thinking his dad abandoned him, and was then kicked out by his remaining family. It took him a long time to finally believe Jason and Piper were really his friends and actually cared for him in return. He frequently feels like the "seventh wheel" during their quest, given everyone else had a significant other on the ship and he didn't. He's quick to flirt, especially when the woman in question is completely out of his league, but deep down he always knows it won't happen. He thinks Calypso hates him too, for a large portion of their time together. Even when he swears to the River Styx to get back to her and rescue her from her island, he still doubts their future together. At the end of the day, he just wanted to feel needed by his friends and not be replaceable.
Abilities & Inventory: Like with most halfbloods, Leo comes with major ADHD and dyslexia. In reality, the ADHD is a built in fighting mechanism. It allows him to analyze and respond in battle quickly, but it's been stated that even by demigod standards, Leo is extremely ADHD. While he's not exactly a trained fighter, he has been known to wield a hammer to help fend of enemies. The dyslexia is his brain being hardwired to read Ancient Greek and Latin rather than other languages, though he's never been overly good at this.
Being the son of Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths and fire, he has a keen ability for working with machines. There isn't much he can't fix if he knows what to do, and sometimes, even when he doesn't know what he's doing, he can make things subconsciously. His most major accomplishments include fixing a rabid metal dragon and giving it wings, and building the Argo II - a giant flying Greek battle ship, and inventing a holographic scroll. He can also 'sense' traps, and is able to find them and disarm them when no one else can even see them. Along with this, on some occasions, he can will machines to work for him, such as a time where he willing an old, rusted hinge to open for him. He can also get a full comprehension of a machine just by touch, allowing him to know and understand how to work them.
As for fire, he inherited the ability of pyrokinesis. Not only is he resistant to fire, only feeling a slight tingling when touching the element, he is able to control it and make it do his will. Besides the standard pointing and shooting flames, he can summon fire on his body, to the point the he'll be engulfed in flames and the surrounding area will heat up. This happens sometimes on accident. When he gets overly emotional (like when he's really angry, and when he's really excited), his body heats up and flames will appear, and he won't even notice. He can also sense fire and heat that is around him, the same way he can with traps. If he focuses really hard, he can also prevent his clothes from burning, but most of the time, he can't avoid that problem. Unless he's wearing the fireproof clothes Calypso made for him.
Besides abilities he gained from his father and by being a halfblood, Leo is able to speak both English and Spanish fluently and has been known to switch between the two without realizing it. When he was young, his mother taught him Morse Code and he also learned what he called "Creak and Squeak", meaning he learned to understand Festus the automaton dragon. He can also cook pretty decently.
For items, he'll just have his Camp Half-Blood T-shirt, his army jacket, as well as his magical toolbelt. In canon, this toolbelt is (mostly) limitless, allowing him to pull out a large range of items, ranging from cooking supplies to any tool or gadget you can find in a workshop. If necessary, this can be limited to just small items found in workshops.
Suitability & Plans: Leo is one of my favorite and easiest characters to play, making him always my go to when trying out new games. Given it's been a bit since I've RPed in a game, he's the easiest for me to jump in with. He's outgoing and silly and always makes me laugh with how ridiculous he is. Not to mention, the shenangians that will ensue with his only castmate coming from a different canon point that him. I don't exactly have a set plan on what he'll do in game except cause chaos but that's a start.
(Not gonna lie, Lae I'm sorry that you're gonna have to deal with Percy AND Leo's stupid selves.)
